New BHUNT Malware Targets Cryptocurrency Wallets through Software Installs

The malware deals with top of installs of unsecured or cracked software, that already comes packaged with the system to be released on desktop environments. As soon as installed, the software application extracts passphrases and seeds from popular wallets.

BHUNT Malware Spotted in the Wild

Bitdefender, a leading cybersecurity company, has actually issued a report relating to a brand-new kind of password stealer that concentrates on cryptocurrency wallets users have on their PCs. BHUNT, as this new malware is called, enters computer systems through infected software installs, primarily of split software. According to the technical file issued on the software, BHUNT attacks Exodus, Electrum, Atomic, Jaxx, Ethereum, Bitcoin, and Litecoin wallets. When installed, the software can transfer the funds of the users to another wallet, and also take other private data residing in the contaminated computer system.

Password stealers are not new to the PC sector, as computers can already be contaminated by various viruses that likewise have these capabilities. What is special about this software is that its existence is greatly encrypted and it is packaged as digitally signed software application, however the released certificate does not match with the binary of the program.

Infection and Prevention

Bitdefender concluded that BHUNT was launched in the wild with no clear target by the method it has spread out. On how the software spread, Bitdefender’s report states:

All our telemetry stemmed from home users who are more likely to have cryptocurrency wallet software application set up on their systems. This target group is also most likely to install fractures for operating system software application, which we believe is the main infection source.

The business showed the level of infections found on a map, and the countries with the most infections provided were Australia, Egypt, Germany, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Norway, Singapore, South Africa, Spain, and the U.S.

Bitdefender likewise issued recommendations to avoid being contaminated with BHUNT or with other, comparable password-stealing malware. “The most efficient way to resist this threat is to avoid installing software application from untrusted sources and to keep security options as much as date,” the report concluded.

Recently, a gush which contained the brand-new “Spiderman: No Chance Home” movie was reported to also include cryptocurrency malware.
